Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements. Submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these requirements.

  • Submissions must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere. Any prior posting or distribution must be disclosed in the “Comments to the Editor.”
  • The corresponding author declares that the manuscript is original work by the authors. All data and sources must be properly acknowledged.
  • The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all co-authors have approved the submission. Failure to list an author may result in co-authors not being listed on the article at publication.
  • All data and sources are properly acknowledged, and the authors adhered to Urbani izziv guidelines for responsible use of AI.
  • Research involving people must comply with laws and institutional guidelines, with required approvals documented in the submission.
  • By submitting, authors agree that manuscripts may be checked for plagiarism and self-plagiarism.
  • By submitting, authors grant Urbani izziv publisher a non-exclusive license to publish the work in print and online. Authors retain copyright and may deposit accepted versions in personal or institutional repositories. All published works are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0).
  • Authors must obtain permission for any third-party copyrighted material.
  • Authors are solely responsible for the statements and ideas expressed in their contributions. As such, only fully attributed contributions shall be published.
  • The journal policies and guidelines have been reviewed and followed.

Obligatory files

  Manuscript

  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Instructions for authors. Manuscripts must be prepared according to the Manuscript format and style guidelines and uploaded as a Word document (doc, docx, or rtf).
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, personal information about the author noted in the file title and file properties are removed.
  • The reference list is formatted according to the journal’s guidelines. Every source listed is cited in the text, and DOIs or URLs are included whenever available.

Title page

  • Articles should include a separate file named Title page with the following details:
    • Article title.
    • Author names: full given and family names, in the same order as in the submission system. Check spelling carefully.
    • Affiliations: full postal address of each institution where the work was carried out, including country, and author email if available.
    • Corresponding author: clearly indicate who will handle correspondence during review, publication, and post-publication, including queries about data or methodology. Keep contact details up to date.
    • Present or permanent address (if different from the affiliation where the work was done), indicated as a footnote with superscript numerals. The main affiliation must remain the institution where the work was conducted.
    • Acknowledgements: indicate the source of research funding for the findings presented in the article, or any other acknowledgements.

Additional files

  • Figures are placed in the Word file with text in the appropriate place and additionaly provided as separate graphic files, in a jpg, tiff, png or similar format.
  • Tables are placed in the Word file with text in the appropriate place.

Proofreading/Language requirements

  • Authors are responsible for proofreading their manuscripts before submission. Non-Slovenian authors receive professional English editing and free translation into Slovenian. Authors who submit manuscripts in Slovenian, must provide an English translation once the manuscript is accepted. Final proofreading of both language versions is carried out by the journal staff.

Articles

This part includes peer-reviewed research articles and review articles.

Article structure

Articles submitted to Urbani izziv should adhere to the following general requirements:

  • Articles in this section should be between 4,000 and 8,000 words.
  • All articles must include a title (and subtitle, if applicable), abstract, keywords, main text, and references. The main text should generally begin with an introduction and conclude with a conclusion.
  • The abstract should clearly define the purpose, major findings and conclusions of the article. The abstract should not exceed 200 words.
  • Choose three to five keywords that are already in common use in bibliographic systems. If possible, write keywords in the plural (e.g., cities, residential areas, multi-dwelling buildings, etc.).
  • Sections and subsections should be numbered decimally. Only two additional header levels are allowed (e.g., first sub-level: 1.1, second sub-level: 1.1.1). Footnotes and endnotes are not permitted.

Submission formats

       Original scientific articles

Original scientific articles should follow this structure:

  • Introduction: Present the research background, current state of the field, research gap, motivation, aim, and research questions.
  • Methods: Describe study design, area, data sources, tools, models, and analysis methods; define variables and justify methodological choices.
  • Results: Present findings according to the research questions, clearly and concisely.
  • Discussion: Interpret the results, link to existing research, assess methodological limitations, and highlight broader implications.
  • Conclusion: Summarize main findings, provide interpretations, and indicate unresolved questions or future research directions.

       Review articles

Review articles should follow this structure:

  • Introduction: Provide the background, outline the problem (including trends, gaps, or conflicts), and state the purpose or justification of the review.
  • Material and methods: Describe sources, search strategies, selection criteria, and analytical methods (e.g., meta-analysis if applicable).
  • Literature review: Organize by thematic, chronological, methodological, or geographical subheadings. Highlight agreements, disagreements, and trends in the literature.
  • Conclusions: Present key insights, interpret results, identify unresolved questions, and draw overarching conclusions.

       Short scientific articles

Short scientific articles should follow the same structural principles as original scientific articles but in a more concise format, with a maximum length of 3,000 words.

       Special issue articles

Special issue articles adhere to the article types and formats supported by Urbani izziv, as outlined in this section.

Presentations and information

Presentations and information: this part contains book reviews, opinion articles, presentations (e.g., projects, events, lectures, conferences, etc.), library information, and other material. 

Articles submitted to this section should adhere to the following general requirements:

  • Articles should not exceed 2,000 words.
  • All articles must include a title (and subtitle, if applicable), abstract, keywords, main text, and references. The main text should generally begin with an introduction and conclude with a conclusion.
  • The abstract should clearly define the purpose, major findings and conclusions of the article. The abstract should not exceed 200 words.

Presentations and information

Articles first state the title of the contribution. The title of the contribution, when it refers to a book announcement or a review, may be arbitrary and need not be the same as the title of the book or work described or evaluated. However, it should relate to the content/review of the work or book described and be as short and simple as possible. The title is followed by the original title of the work, full name of the author(s), full name of the editor(s), publisher, year, and ISBN number; for example:

Separately submit an image of the cover page of the work evaluated. The quality and form of the illustration should comply with the requirements in these instructions.
